A Freedom of Information Act (FOIA) request was sent to the City Of Port Washington on November 7, 2024. The request, made by Ozaukee County News, sought information about voters who registered on Election Day.
As a media organization dedicated to providing comprehensive and accurate news coverage on local governmental affairs, we requested a list of new registrations - specifically those voters that registered to vote on November 5, 2024.
This request was made under the Wisconsin Open Records Law, §19.31 et seq., and we expressed a preference for receiving the records in an electronic format.
As journalists committed to holding public institutions accountable and providing transparency to the public, access to such public records is essential for us to fulfill our professional responsibilities. Given our role in disseminating information, we also indicated our belief that we are eligible for a fee waiver as media professionals.
We remain committed to keeping the public informed about local government affairs and will continue to seek out necessary information through legal channels such as FOIA requests.
