Scarlett Johnson, a member of Moms for Liberty Wisconsin, expressed her concerns about the recent decision made by the Milwaukee County Board of Supervisors to declare Milwaukee County a sanctuary for "transgender" and "nonbinary" individuals. The board voted in favor of the resolution last week, with 12 supervisors supporting it and 4 supervisors opposing it. Three individuals were not present during the meeting.
The resolution aims to prioritize gender-affirming care and related matters for transgender and nonbinary individuals in Milwaukee County. It specifically urges the Milwaukee County Sheriff to give the lowest enforcement priority to any potential laws that may impose penalties on individuals involved in gender-affirming care. This includes fines or sanctions. The resolution does not include language requiring parental consent for minors seeking "sex change drugs and surgeries."
Johnson expressed her concerns about the lack of parental consent requirement, stating, "Milwaukee board members included no language requiring parental consent for sex change drugs & surgeries." She also pointed out that this decision follows a similar one made by Dane County three months ago. Dane County established sanctuary status with a 25-1 vote and also prioritizes supporting transgender and nonbinary individuals, particularly youth, through county school boards.
In addition to the lack of parental consent requirement, Johnson criticized the resolution for urging the Milwaukee County Sheriff to "ignore the law" and give the lowest enforcement priority if the state passes a law in the future that imposes punishments on individuals or organizations involved in gender-affirming care, such as puberty blockers, hormones, or surgery.
Moms for Liberty, the organization Johnson is a part of, is known for its conservative stance. The organization was co-founded in Melbourne, Florida in 2021 by Tina Descovich and Tiffany Justice. Its mission is to defend parental rights at all levels of government and fight for the survival of America. Since its inception, Moms for Liberty has grown to include 285 chapters across 45 states, with over 115,000 members nationwide.
The decision by the Milwaukee County Board of Supervisors to declare Milwaukee County a sanctuary for transgender and nonbinary individuals has sparked concerns among conservatives like Scarlett Johnson. The lack of parental consent requirement and the potential disregard for future laws related to gender-affirming care are points of contention for those opposed to the resolution.
